Improve your designs with ITERATION

Your first idea is never your best. Iteration will make you a better designer! Please remember to subscribe http://bit.ly/1aE5UOT

In this video I demonstrate the iteration/design process with a graphic to advertise a workshop, but I go through this same iteration process when I design websites. I hope this video answers questions about why you should ‘bother’ to design first before you code, and I hope it encourages you to really push your ideas further. Don’t settle for the first thing you create! You can always find small ways to improve it.

A side note that i didn’t cover in the video, is you also need to know when to end the iteration process. I could have kept going for days trying different things with this graphic, but there was other work to do! So another part of iterating is learning when to stop; when to call it ‘done’ and move on to the next project!

How to convert a Figma design to Webflow

Tips and advice for a quick workflow moving from Figma to Webflow! I’m proud to have Webflow as a sponsor for this video. Try out converting your Figma designs to a working website here: https://wfl.io/figma

Converting your design mockup to a working website is made soooo much easier with Webflow. It’s a visual code tool, so even though you’re dragging elements onto a canvas and changing settings to style like you would in a design tool, you’re creating code as you do it. Here’s my workflow for taking a design in Figma and bringing it to life in Webflow!

Try Webflow out here: https://wfl.io/figma

and visit my finished page here: https://designlife.fm/community

My biggest fear as a designer

An honest chat about something that’s on my mind and I think is holding me back. Please remember to subscribe http://bit.ly/1aE5UOT and expand to read more!

Imposter syndrome is a bitch. I know I care way too much about what other people think of me, but I do really want to be respected as a designer. And I also want to feel like I’m deserving of that respect! I realise that the way i talked about focussing on my career might have come across like I’m not making videos anymore?? But that’s for sure not the case! You’ll see me in your subscription boxes every single week, just as I have been making a new video every week for almost 5 years now.

Thank you thank you for 100,000 subscribers. That’s huge and I can’t believe it. And I also feel like I don’t deserve it lol thanks imposter syndrome for that too. I’m excited to share what I’m learning with you and to talk about design projects I’m working on.

What’s a fear that’s holding you back? If you feel comfortable sharing, I’d love to hear about it in the comments.

Design portfolios are SO important to getting hired, and getting clients as a designer. I love giving advice to designers for improving their portfolios to help them go after their goals. If you’d like for yours to be reviewed in the next episode, submit it following the instructions here! http://charlimarie.com/portfolio-review

In this episode you’ll note I talked a lot about customisation and showing personality through your portfolio. That’s really hard to do when you’re just using a template, and that’s why I’m so happy that Webflow exists! It’s for sure making the process of creating my own personal portfolio better as I’m able to confidently bring my ideas to life without having to code them. If you’ve been wanting a custom portfolio but your coding skills have been holding you back, I highly recommend you give Webflow a try! http://wfl.io/portflio

Sketch vs Figma – Why I switched!

Sketch or Figma? Which should you use? In this video I’m telling you my reasons for switching!

Please remember to subscribe http://bit.ly/1aE5UOT

It feels like there are a million design tools we’re supposed to be paying attention to, but completely switching to a new tool can mean a new workflow, new things to learn, new processes… it’s a lot of effort! Recently I switched from Sketch to using Figma and I wanted to tell you why I made the switch and what I’m loving about Figma!

A weekly vlog again finally?! (Design work + a DIY haircut!)

THE VLOG IS BACK. Please remember to subscribe if you want to see more: http://bit.ly/1aE5UOT

real talk: I’ve started many vlogs over the past few months and just not finished them. With this vlog right here I feel like I found my love of vlogging again. Nothing much exciting happens. It’s me in my flat working, signing along to music, having a chat and messing around with my hair. But I love that it’s an accurate representation of my life that week!

I’m looking forward to vlogging more in future weeks and sharing more of my life with you ๐Ÿ™‚

How (& WHY) to share your unfinished work for feedback!

I know, I know! It’s scary to share work that you know isn’t great yet… but here’s why you should do it, and how to get value from the process!

Please remember to subscribe http://bit.ly/1aE5UOT

Learning how to get used to sharing work that isn’t in a finished state is a vital part of becoming a designer. Getting feedback on work as you go, rather than when you’re ‘finished’ will stop you from going down the wrong path and will vastly improve your design process. In this video i share my top tips for how to have a positive experience when sharing your unfinished work. Hope you enjoy it!

Make sure to complete the mission I give at the end and report back in the comments ๐Ÿ™‚
