ESA Euronews: Studying climate threats with Sentinel

The most recent trends in sea level size mean the low-lying Camargue region of southern France could be submerged by the sea by the end of the century.

The sea walls built along the coast in the 1980s have already been broken by the waves, as a combination of rising waters, slowly sinking landmass, and reduced amounts of sediment from the Rhone river spell trouble for this environment.

Anis Guelmami uses Copernicus Sentinel satellites to study wetlands like the Camargue, and he tells us the latest news from space.

Camargue, no sul de França, é uma região famosa pelas paisagens e vida selvagem, mas também um lugar seriamente ameaçado pelas alterações climáticas, por causa da subida do nível do mar.

Os muros de rochas ao longo da costa foram construídos nos anos 80, num esforço fracassado para travar o mar Mediterrâneo. Naquela época, o nível do mar subia apenas alguns milímetros por ano. Agora, os satélites descobriram que as águas estão a subir muito mais rápido do que antes, alimentadas pelo degelo das calotas glaciares e pelo aumento das temperaturas.

Os cientistas estão a usar satélites para compreender melhor o que está a acontecer em regiões como esta e em todo o planeta.

ESA Euronews: Μελετώντας τις κλιματικές απειλές με το Sentinel

Όλοι έχουμε αρχίσει να αισθανόμαστε τις συνέπειες της κλιματικής αλλαγής. Όχι μόνο λόγω του καλοκαιρινού καύσωνα, αλλά επειδή βλέπουμε την στάθμη της θάλασσας να ανεβαίνει πιο γρήγορα από ποτέ. Το γνωρίζουμε χάρη στην δορυφορική τεχνολογία, που μας δίνει μια παγκόσμια εικόνα του τι συμβαίνει στον πλανήτη.

Βρισκόμαστε στο Καμάργκ στη νότια Γαλλία – περιοχή που είναι διάσημη για το τοπίο και την άγρια φύση αλλά και ένα μέρος που απειλείται σοβαρά από την κλιματική αλλαγή λόγω της ανόδου της στάθμης της θάλασσας. Οι επιστήμονες χρησιμοποιούν τώρα δορυφόρους για να καταλάβουν τι συμβαίνει σε μέρη όπως αυτό και σε όλο τον πλανήτη μας.

Τα θαλάσσια τείχη στην ακτή του Καμάργκ χτίστηκαν τη δεκαετία του ’80 σε μια αποτυχημένη προσπάθεια να κρατηθεί η Μεσόγειος στον κόλπο. Τότε η στάθμη της θαλασσας ανέβαινε λίγα χιλιοστά ετησίως. Τώρα, οι δορυφόροι έχουν ανακαλύψει ότι η στάθμη ανεβαίνει πολύ πιο γρήγορα από ό, τι πριν, καθως λιώνουν οι πάγοι και αυξάνεται η θερμοκρασία.

Space vous emmène en Camargue, dans le Sud de la France, une région réputée pour ses paysages et sa faune, mais aussi sérieusement menacée par le changement climatique à cause de l’élévation du niveau de la mer.
